DOCUMENTARY : PEOPLE'S FIREHOUSE # 1

PAUL SCHNEIDER made this film in the late 1970s with help from the People's Firehouse and Third World Newsreel among others. It won awards at the Mannheim Film Festival & the American Film Festival, and was screened multiple times on WNET PBS Channel 13 in NYC 1979-1985.

People's Firehouse # 1 is an introduction to how PFI began, the people responsible, the strength of a community, and the actions they took to keep their homes from disappearing. PFI was organized by Adam Venezki, a local grocer turned neighborhood activist, and a group of dedicated neighbors from the mostly Polish community who became activists, fought back and won!

Times have changed, and new issues have arose with rapid development and gentrification. The People's Firehouse continues to evolve and look for new ways to meet current needs of residents in our community.
